For 7 days, nothing happended, in fact, when I was filling out other feeders (a Nyjar and a "wild bird" mix) I noticed that nothing had happened, none of the birds were the least bit interested in our safflower. I began to wonder if Megs had purchased some bird seed for seasonal birds. So that was Thursday, today is Monday, I'm out surveying our property with Charlie and Lucy and I prepare myself for a full bird feeder, much to my surprise it was empty. Totally gone. Sunday we saw 2 birds out there, and I guess those 2 invited all their bird buddies and they ate our safflower seeds.
Today is my birthday, it was celebrated internationally. Well maybe not celebrated, but at least recognized, Elisabeth in Japan emailed me, Dana in China emailed me and Kathy in riotous Chile called! She's OK, but I guess it's pretty crazy since Augusto Pinochet died.
Finally, I made perhaps the worst sober decision of my life today. Whenever we leave, Lucy goes crazy and rips up whatever's in her kennel, so I thought "hey, we've got an old chicken coup full of hay we're not using, I'll bring that in for her." Well, she loved the hay, didn't go real crazy when I was gone, and was sleeping when I got back. HOWEVER, upon my return I realized the whole house smelled like Kathy "I live in Chile" O'Connell. I removed the hay, and cleaned the kennel, the house still smells like a dirty old barn and Lucy was noticeably dissapointed as I was removing her lovely new bed. Maybe some fresh hay wouldn't smell so bad.

Sounds like Lucy is experiencing separation anxiety. She doesn't need the hay. She needs reassurance that you will return. I would suggest reading Patricia McConnell's book on Separation Anxiety. She has many suggestions you might try to help Lucy keep it together while you are gone.
This from someone with a pack of the most annoying dogs ever...
I'm sorry for unleashing my mom here. We try to keep her in the kennel, but she's crafty. If she keeps harassing you guys, and you have to put her down, I'll understand.
Fresh hay smells like me, heavenly.
